The Scariest Season for Your Skin Isn't Winter
The Scariest Season for Your Skin Isn't Winter
Your skin noticed the heater turned on before you did.
It happened on the first cold morning of the season. The furnace kicked on overnight for the first time since spring, and I woke up with skin that felt two sizes too small. Tight across the cheeks. A little flaky around the nose. By the time I sat down for my first Zoom call, my foundation had found every dry patch on my face and decided to highlight them.
Nobody sends you a calendar invite for that.
Here's the thing most of us miss: winter isn't the scariest season for your skin. Fall is. It's the transition, when the air changes fast, and our routines don't change at all. We're still using our summer moisturizer, our summer lip color, our summer "I'll deal with it later" mindset. And our skin is already losing the fight.
Meet the three villains
Villain #1: The furnace. Indoor heat pulls humidity out of the air, and dry air pulls moisture out of your skin. You spend most of your day inside, so this one works overtime.
Villain #2: The wind. Colorado wind doesn't just mess up your hair. It strips your skin's protective barrier, especially on exposed areas like your cheeks and lips.
Villain #3: Altitude. Thinner air holds less moisture, and the sun hits harder up here. That combo means your skin loses water faster and takes more UV damage, even on chilly days when you'd never think to worry about it.
Put all three together and you have a horror story that plays out on your face every October.
What it looks like on a busy woman
You don't have time to analyze your pores. You have a team to lead, clients to support, and a family who thinks you know where everything is. So the signs sneak up on you:
You look dull on camera, even when you feel sharp.
Your foundation clings to dry patches by mid-morning.
Your lipstick feathers into fine lines by lunch.
None of that reflects how capable you are. It just reflects air that's working against you.
Three fall swaps that actually help
You don't need a 12-step routine. You need three smart adjustments.
1. Trade up your moisturizer. The lightweight formula that worked in July isn't enough anymore. Switch to something richer that locks moisture in. My pick: Nangai Oil or Collagen Night Pak
2. Add one hydrating step. Before your moisturizer, layer in a product built to pull hydration into the skin. This is the step that keeps your face looking rested on camera. My pick: Climate Control.
3. Wear a lip that stays put and doesn't dry you out. LipSense is a long-wear color that holds up through coffee, meetings, and yes, Colorado wind. Pair it with a moisturizing gloss, and your lips stay polished without cracking by 2 p.m.
That's it. Three swaps, a few extra minutes, and your skin stops sabotaging your presence.
Invest in you now, thank yourself all winter
You invest in your career, your team, and your people every single day. This season, put yourself on the list too. The small changes you make now protect how you show up for the next six months, in the boardroom, on Zoom, and in your own mirror.
